What This Rubric Measures

This evaluates session quality, not teacher quality. A strong teacher can have a weak session, and the rubric must be able to say so. Its job is to surface what made this hour worth being live and what the teacher's next move is.

How to Use

Apply within fifteen minutes of viewing. Place each dimension at one level — do not split. The instrument is calibrated so that a competent-but-unremarkable session lands at Approaching on most rows. Meets requires evidence in the session itself; Exceeds requires evidence at a level that would teach another teacher something. Reviewers who find themselves marking Meets by default are not reading honestly. Workshop variants are shown inline for the three dimensions where the standard shifts between Mon/Tue instructional sessions and Wed/Thu workshops.

The Matrix

Dimension Below Standard Approaching Meets Exceeds
Anchor First ~5 minutes Opens with logistics, tech troubleshooting, or "today we're doing X." Student leaves the opening with no purpose stated. Topic is named, but no reason this matters and no statement of what students will be able to do by the end. Within five minutes the teacher names what students will be able to do, argue, or make by the end, and locates the session in the larger arc. The anchor carries a stake — a question the session will answer, a tension it will resolve, a problem it will work. Students know why this hour and not another.
Workshop variant — — Names what students will produce in this block and what counts as real progress. Names the specific failure mode students will likely hit and signals that hitting it is the point of the session.
Substance What makes it worth being live Could be delivered as a written handout with no loss. The live time adds nothing. Content is correct and grade-appropriate but would survive being a recording. Content is built or extended in ways that require the live moment — student questions shape the path, examples are co-produced, the teacher works a problem students cannot yet work alone. The session goes somewhere the plan didn't specify — a student question changes the route, an unexpected example is taken seriously, the teacher's own thinking visibly extends in real time.
Workshop variant Busywork; practice that produces no new evidence about students. Practice is acceptable but does not expose misconceptions or stretch capacity. Practice exposes student misconceptions in real time and the teacher addresses them. Students leave with a product, attempt, or insight they could not have produced alone before this hour.
Presence Throughout Teacher could be talking to any room. No apparent investment in this cohort or moment. Teacher addresses students collectively but rarely individually. Responses to contributions are generic ("good," "right," moving on). Teacher addresses students by name, references prior sessions or known student work, and extends student contributions rather than only acknowledging them. Teacher carries the cohort's history into the room — names what a student got wrong last week and is now getting right, references a project by specifics, treats the room as people they know.
Student Work Production, not consumption Students consume. Cameras and mics off, no production. Teacher talks; students listen or pretend to. Students respond when called on but produce nothing they couldn't produce passively. Participation is acknowledgment, not work. At multiple points students are required to do something cognitive that produces evidence — solve, draft, argue, predict, defend. The teacher waits for the work rather than performing through silence. Student work shapes the session. A wrong answer becomes the next ten minutes; a question reframes the topic. The hour is visibly built on what students did in it.
Workshop variant Students don't actually produce; the block becomes another lecture. Students produce but the teacher does not engage what they produced. Students leave with measurable progress and the teacher has touched each student's work at least once. Students push through a difficulty they could not have pushed through alone, and at least one student visibly changes their approach because of it.
Formative Reading Reading the room Teacher proceeds regardless of student state. No checks, or only rhetorical ones ("everyone got that?"). Teacher checks for understanding but does not adjust. Hands go up, wrong answers get corrected, the lesson continues on rails. Teacher reads multiple signals (responses, silences, chat, written work) and at least once adjusts the path based on what is read. Teacher names what they are seeing in the room ("three of you wrote X — let's talk about why that's the wrong move") and reorganizes the session around it.
Close Final minutes Session ends because time ran out. Students leave without a clear sense of what they did or what's next. Ends with a logistical handoff (assignment reminder, due date) but no synthesis of what was built in the hour. Teacher names what students should now be able to do, what they do not yet do well, or what they should attempt before next session. Students leave with something to carry out. The close surfaces what students should now be able to do and what remains unresolved — a question to sit with, a tension to hold, a problem to attempt. The session points beyond itself.

Synthesis

Keep doing

Name the single move this teacher should keep doing — something the session demonstrated that is worth preserving. Be specific. One move, not a list.

Next growth move

Name the single next growth move — not a list. The one change that would most raise the floor of this teacher's live time.

The holistic question

Would a student in this cohort, given no attendance requirement, choose to come back next week? If yes, what specifically would draw them back? If no, what would they decide is not worth their time? A reviewer who cannot answer this question has not watched the session closely enough.

A note on honest scoring. A session that is competent but lifeless lands in the middle of this rubric, not at the top. The instrument distinguishes good teaching from showy teaching, and quiet excellence from coasting. If most rows are landing at Meets without specific evidence, re-watch the session — or score lower.
